Today at Stanley, I learned about behavior regulation and teaching social skills with students. In Ms. Scarpone's class, there was a student having a rough day and not wanting to enter the classroom to do their social skills lesson. She worked with the student outside the classroom by calmly talking to him and providing incentives for the student, such as if we go inside the classroom, you can meet my new friend. Eventually, I went outside the classroom and met the student. Once I began to connect with this student and show interest in his life, he transitioned to the classroom. During the social skills lesson, we played hangman with Ms. Scarpone and finished a story about a boy who wanted to do everything his own way. I enjoy teaching and observing Math and Reading lessons, but I think my favorite lessons might be social skills. I really enjoy being able to connect with the students and help them grow in their interpersonal goals.
